The Honest Chemistry of a Clean Floor
I have spent thirty-one years pushing a mop, and I want to tell you what a clean floor actually is, because the cleaner-aisle industry has spent a fortune convincing you it is something else. On the label it is a germ, on the marketing sheet it is a promise, and in the bucket it is — mostly — show.
Let me start with the chemistry I trust, because chemistry is honest even when advertising is not. Household bleach is sodium hypochlorite, an oxidizer. Hydrogen peroxide — the compound I reach for more than any other, bottle up on my cart — is also an oxidizing agent. That word, oxidizer, is the whole story: it steals electrons from whatever it touches. The rules for handling a spill of peroxide from a dropped bottle are the same rules that make it a disinfectant. Same atom, doing the same job on the floor and the fire. I respect that.

What the 99.9% number does not tell you
The law lets a disinfectant claim kill 99.9% of germs if it does so in a clean petri dish in a lab. It says nothing about the film of hand cream and dust and coffee that is actually on your doorknob. Contact time is everything: a chemical can only work if the surface stays wet with it. In a busy corridor, my mop leaves it wet for maybe thirty seconds before traffic the floor gets. So my first honest act is to stop pretending the disinfectant is doing the heroic thing and start doing the humble one.
Soap is the real worker
Ninety per cent of what makes a floor safe is removing the soil, not sterilising it. Soap solubilises grease; hot water loosens settled grime; a cloth or mop hoists it away. That is physical removal, and it needs no fear-mongering spray. This is where I get pushed back from both directions. The chemical company wants you terrified so you buy more. The greenwashing company wants you to feel virtuous about a "plant-derived" surfactant shipped in a single-use plastic jug — which is its own kind of theatre. Neither tells you that a well-rinsed mop and two buckets — one dirty, one clean — do more for a washroom floor than any bottle with a skull on it.
The painter's rule, borrowed
In watercolour you do not get white by adding white; you get it by not putting anything there, and by waiting for each wash to dry before you trust it. Cleaning is the same patience turned outward. You cannot rush a restroom floor, any more than you can rush a wash of Payne's grey. The mean streak of a good Hygienist — I use the word the old training manuals use — is recognising what does not need to be attacked, only carried away. The room returns to itself. That is the whole alchemy, and there is no chemistry lab required.
